Make a difference - PLEDGE to switch five lights to ENERGY STAR qualified lights to save energy and help reduce climate change. The ENERGY STAR Change A Light Pledge is a way for all New Jersey residents to commit to being more energy-efficient.
Visit retailers across New Jersey that are offering special discounts on ENERGY STAR qualified lighting. Please click here for a list of retailers and find one near you.
Here are some important facts about New Jersey ENERGY STAR qualified lighting:
- ENERGY STAR qualified lighting uses 75% less energy than standard lighting and lasts up to 10 times longer.
- If every American home replaced just one light bulb or fixture with ENERGY STAR lighting, every year we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes, more than $600 million in energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars.
- Save an average of $30 or more in energy costs over each bulb’s lifetime
- Prevent more than 400 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions each over their lifetime
- Contain a small amount of mercury, so should be disposed of properly, ideally recycled. Please click here for more information. Now some retailers across the country such as the Home Depot are accepting CFLs be disposed at their stores. This is a part of Home Depot's CFL recycling program. Click here for more details.

- Are available in different sizes and shapes to fit in almost any fixture, for indoors and outdoors
- Use at least 2/3 less energy
- Come in hundreds of popular styles including portable fixtures – such as table, desk, floor and torchiere lamps – and hard-wired fixtures such as outdoor, cabinet, suspended, ceiling-mount, recessed, wall-mount, and ceiling fans
- Come with pin-based compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) that offer bright light for at least 10,000 hours, or about 7 years, saving money and time buying bulbs
- Generate 70 percent less heat than standard incandescent lighting
