Commercial Industrial and Local Government Programs

New Jersey SmartStart Buildings

Whether you are starting a new commercial or industrial project, renovating existing space, or upgrading equipment, The New Jersey SmartStart Buildings® Program provides significant financial incentives for qualifying measures.

Pay for Performance

Pay for PerformanceExisting and new construction commercial, industrial, institutional and multi-family buildings are eligible to participate in Pay for Performance.

This comprehensive, whole-building approach to energy efficiency starts with an Energy Reduction Plan developed by an energy expert that you select from among our network of Program Partners.

Direct Install

Direct Install offers a streamlined process to energy efficiency for owners of small to mid-sized buildings with a monthly peak demand of 200 kW or less. Replace your old equipment or lighting system with energy-efficient technology and Direct Install pays 70% of the total project cost. It all begins with a FREE, no obligation energy assessment to identify cost-justified measures eligible for incentives. Once you give the go-ahead, a pre-qualified, trained contractor completes the installation. Get started by contacting the contractor serving your region.

Free Energy Benchmarking

Benchmarking is a process for evaluating the energy use performance of commercial, industrial, and municipal buildings. This service is currently available free of charge to owners, managers and administrators of hospitals and healthcare buildings, municipalities, industries, multifamily properties, the hospitality sector, colleges and universities, K-12 schools, retail and other commercial facilities.

Benchmarking assesses performance by comparing data from similar facilities and sometimes by comparing energy use data, year-to-year, within the same building. The information is used to identify your most and least energy efficient buildings, effectively target operations and maintenance efforts and significantly increase energy savings.Energy Benchmarking

View presentation slides from our recent meeting with the NJ Chapter of the International Facility Management Association  (IFMA).

Get started by completing the data collection form that matches your building type or send an e-mail inquiry to Benchmarking@NJCleanEnergy.com and we'll guide you through the process.

Local Government Energy Audit

The Local Government Energy Audit Program is the first step in identifying cost-justified energy efficiency measures for buildings owned by local governments, State Colleges and State Universities, and 501(c) (3) non-profit agencies. These facilities could include offices, courtrooms, town halls, police and fire stations, municipal wastewater, schools, community centers and more. Download the complete guidelines package to review eligibility requirements and the application forms needed for participation.

State Energy Program

Direct Install and the Local Government Energy Audit are now available to New Jersey oil, propane, cooperative and municipal electric customers (non-IOU) that previously were not eligible for incentives. Funding is provided through the State Energy Program (SEP) and is available on a first-come, forst-served basis until all funds are exhausted. The program web page includes complete details and applications.
