Refrigerator Freezer Recycling FAQs

New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program offers an incentive to customers willing to give up their older, energy-wasting refrigerators and freezers. Some of these units can use three times the energy of newer models! NJCEP ensures that the old units are recycled in an environmentally responsible manner by partnering with a vendor to complete the pick up and recycling of these units.

What are the requirements/ conditions?

The refrigerator or freezer must be in working condition, meaning that it has the ability to cool to some degree. The unit must be greater than 10 cubic feet in size, but no larger than 30 cubic feet. We are seeking units that are a 1995 model or older, however, you are not required to date your fridge to participate in the program; a fridge of any age will qualify.

The program is offered to the following electric customers only:

  • Atlantic City Electric
  • Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L)
  • Rockland Electric
  • Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G)

There is a pick up limit of two appliances per account, per calendar year.

How do customers schedule a pickup?

The vendor will arrange a pick up time with you with the understanding that an adult, 18 years of age or older, be present at the time of the driver's arrival. Appointmentss are typically scheduled one to three weeks in advance. Schedule an apointment online or give us a call us at 877.341.2192 to speak to a representative.

Why is New Jersey's Clean Energy Program offering this program?

The program helps customers save money by eliminating older, energy wasting units. In turn, it reduces Clean Energy’s overall energy needs, thus reducing the need for more power plants and avoiding the environmental impacts of energy generation. In addition, units are recycled in an environmentally responsible manner and are not being returned to the used appliance market.

How much of the refrigerator or freezer is recycled and how does it benefit the environment?

More than 90 percent of each unit is recycled by the vendor following guidelines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  ARCA safely disposes of toxins and ozone destroying chlorofluorocarbon (CFC-11) gases from foam insulation. After capturing the toxins (oils, mercury, PCBS) and ozone depleting substances (CFC11 and other foam insulation blowing agents, and CFC 12 and other refrigerants) the facility recycles all the plastic, metals and glass in the fridge, thus limiting landfill waste.

How long does it take to receive my rebate for recycling my old refrigerator or freezer?

It takes approximately 120 days from the day your appliance is collected to receive your check.

How long does the pick up normally take?

Collection times vary. You can expect the collection crew to spend 15-30 minutes at your home.

Do I have to unhook or remove anything before the pick up date?

Yes, if your refrigerator or freezer has a waterline, you will need to disconnect it from the water hook up prior to the arrival of the crew.

What if the refrigerator is in my basement or on the second floor of my home?

If your refrigerator or freezer is located in a basement or on the second floor, you will need to remove any railings that may prevent the crew from clearing the stairwell. In addition, please confirm that the appliance will fit through the door way with the door attached. If there is not enough room, you will need to remove the door(s) in your home prior to the arrival of the crew. A pathway large enough to safely remove the appliance must be made. The collection crew is unable to remove or relocate any items in your home.

How many units can I recycle?

There is a limit of 2 appliances per account, per calendar year.
